International Women's Day for Peace and Disarmament

The motion

That the Parliament recognises 24 May 2022 as International Women's Day for Peace and Disarmament; understands that the day celebrates the historic and current efforts of women for peacebuilding and disarmament; notes that 8 June 2022 would be the 175th birthday of Bertha Von Suttner, the first woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize; further notes that, in 1891, Bertha was responsible for the creation of the Permanent International Peace Bureau in Bern, which in itself won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1910, and which developed in later years into one of the leading NGOs for nuclear disarmament and the opposition to war; acknowledges the celebration of women's leadership and participation in peace processes on 24 May for more than 20 years; encourages everyone to rededicate themselves to implementing the goals of the United Nations for a world of peace and security through disarmament, the non-violent resolution of conflicts, and the reallocation of resources from military budgets to meet social and development goals, and calls for universal support for the international treaties to ban landmines, cluster munitions and nuclear weapons.
