No Tobacco Day 2022

The motion

That the Parliament notes that 31 May is No Tobacco Day 2022, which is an annual campaign day promoted by the World Health Organization (WHO); welcomes No Tobacco Day and the global theme of Poisoning Our Planet, which seeks to expose what it sees as the harm tobacco production has on the environment; understands that tobacco production is estimated annually to result in 600,000,000 trees being chopped down, 84,000,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions released into the air and 22,000,000,000 litres of water used; considers that this causes serious ecological harm to some of the poorest countries in the world; regrets that eight million deaths are reportedly caused annually by smoking; understands that smoking rates in Scotland are falling, however that this is not at a rate to meet the Scottish Government’s 2034 smoke-free target; further understands that tobacco use is a major cause of health inequalities; commits to tackling waste caused by single-use tobacco products, which, it believes, pollute and litter communities across Scotland, and welcomes the campaigning by Asthma + Lung UK Scotland, ASH Scotland and British Heart Foundation Scotland, and many other third sector groups, to raise what it sees as the life-threatening and harmful impact of smoking on lung and cardiovascular health.
