No Tobacco Day 2022
The motion
That the Parliament marks World No Tobacco Day, which was established by the World Health Organization (WHO) and takes place on 31 May 2022; understands that the theme for 2022 is spotlighting what it believes is the tobacco industry’s contribution to the global climate crisis, including the reported chopping down of 600,000,000 trees to make cigarettes and 84,000,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions released into the air each year; commends the health charity, ASH Scotland, for raising awareness about the impact on Scotland’s environment of the 3.65 billion cigarettes that it understands are smoked each year, most of which reportedly contain filters made of cellulose acetate plastic that take up to 10 years to decompose and leach toxins; understands that this waste weighs an estimated 600,000 kg, enough to fill 50 bin lorries; expresses concern regarding the reported increase of littering and risk of pollution caused by discarded single-use disposable vaping products, which, it understands, contain single-use plastics, toxic chemicals and battery components, and looks forward to the country progressing towards achieving a tobacco-free generation by 2034 and a cleaner, greener and more sustainable environment.
