Maximising the Potential of Scotland's Deposit Return Scheme
The motion
That the Parliament notes the potential for Scotland’s proposed Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) to support recycling and re-use efforts; considers that the current materials included limit the contribution that the DRS can make to increasing recycling and re-use rates in Scotland; believes that consideration should be given to including a wider range of materials, including beverage cartons; further believes that aligning the scope of the DRS with materials commonly recycled from the kerbside via home collections will help reduce consumer confusion and, therefore, potentially increase participation in the proposed DRS, and considers that introduction of a digital kerbside collection system for the DRS has the potential to further increase participation, whilst making it easier to return items and claim deposits via existing household recycling collections.
