University of Glasgow ARC to be Opened by Nobel Prize Winner, Professor David MacMillan

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the announcement that the University of Glasgow’s Mazumdar-Shaw Advanced Research Centre (ARC) will be officially opened by Bellshill-born alumnus David MacMillan on 8 June 2022; recognises that David, a current Princeton University professor, was a winner of the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 2021, alongside Benjamin List, for his work developing organocatalysis; notes that the opening ceremony will celebrate that the ARC is officially open and provide an opportunity to thank donors and supporters; further notes that the ARC has been named after the University of Glasgow graduate, John Shaw, and Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, who gifted $7.5 million to the university in July 2019, and that it is hoped that they will make the journey to Glasgow to attend the opening themselves; believes that the ARC will help facilitate collaboration across disciplines, allowing colleagues from different research areas to share space and meet people with new ideas and interests, and understands that, following on from the official opening in June, the ARC launch festival, ARCadia, will run from 16 to 30 September 2022.
