20th Anniversary of the Youth Music Initiative

The motion

That the Parliament acknowledges the 20th anniversary of the Youth Music Initiative (YMI), administered by Creative Scotland for the Scottish Government, providing an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of young people, while paying tribute to those who make it all happen, and raising awareness of the value of accessing music for all young people into the future; understands that YMI currently operates with an annual budget of £9 million, which allows young people to access a wide range of music-making activities and opportunities; further understands that £1.2 million funding was made available to 44 community projects across the country to provide online concerts, virtual tuition sessions, networking and development opportunities, as well as tailored mentoring programmes; acknowledges what it sees as the positive impact of the YMI; understands that it reached 278,000 young people in 2019-20, is currently supporting more than 300 Scottish-based projects, creating nearly 1,000 jobs and over 3,400 professional development opportunities; notes the Scottish Government's commitment to offer every pupil in Scotland a year of free music tuition by the time they leave primary school, supported through the School Based Music Making Fund, which, it believes, also tackles inequality and engages with young people who would otherwise not be able to participate in meaningful and high-quality music making opportunities; thanks Youth Music manager at Creative Scotland, Morag Donald, and Mrs Oates, headteacher at St Brendan’s Primary, Motherwell, for showcasing the talented young people, and wishes them all the best for the future.
