Sylvia Halkerston Appointed Lord Dean of Guild

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Sylvia Halkerston on being appointed as the Lord Dean of Guild of the City of Aberdeen; notes that Sylvia is the first female to be appointed to the post in Aberdeen; understands that the Lord Dean of Guild is the senior official that represents the Guildry of Burgesses, who were responsible for upholding the laws and customs of the burgh; notes that the role of Dean of Guild dates back to 1214; further notes that, today, the Lord Dean of Guild plays a part in ceremonial and civic occasions such as Remembrance Sunday and the Kirkin of the Council, whilst also representing the Aberdeen Guildry on the Court of Deans of Guild of Scotland; understands that during Sylvia’s long career, she played a key role in setting up the Sector Skills Council for Food & Drink, was the first chairperson of the Scotland Food & Drink Academy, and served as a member of the Advisory Council for the Scottish Qualifications Authority, the Joint Skills Committee for the Scottish Funding Council and Skills Development Scotland, and as a board member of the Scottish Manufacturing Advisory Service as well as for both the University of Abertay and Robert Gordon University; considers that Sylvia’s long career in Human Resource Management will be of great benefit to continuing the work of the Lord Dean of Guild, and wishes her all the best in her role as the Lord Dean of Guild of Aberdeen City.
