Love Island Announces Partnership with eBay to Promote Sustainable Fashion
The motion
That the Parliament welcomes the partnership between popular TV show, Love Island, and eBay UK that will see contestants dressed in second-hand outfits, which fashion experts believe could spark a change in viewers’ shopping habits across the UK; considers that by contestants promoting more sustainable pre-loved clothing on the TV show there is an opportunity to encourage the estimated three million viewers of each episode to think and shop differently, changing the audiences perceptions around second-hand clothing; notes that the partnership will enable viewers to access a “shop the look” tab on the Love Island app or eBay website where they can buy similar second-hand items to those seen on-screen; believes that this move symbolises a step change for the programme after many years of fast fashion promotion, and hopes that this could signal a shift in societal behaviour more generally, towards sustainable means of purchasing fashion items, such as buying used or rental clothing, and understands that fast fashion is one of the biggest polluters on the planet, with Oxfam reporting that 13 million items of clothing go to landfill each week in the UK alone, making circular fashion a critical industry in the transition to net zero.
