The motion

That the Parliament congratulates the University of Glasgow’s Scottish Literature at Glasgow Faculty on its 50th anniversary; recognises what it sees as the unique nature of the faculty as, it understands, the only academic unit in the world dedicated entirely to the study of Scotland’s literary tradition; believes that it is a centre for world-class scholarship and has received consistently excellent reviews for its teaching, that it attracts major external research income and is committed to cutting edge research and teaching and that its lecturers have done much to promote Scottish literature as an autonomous area of research and teaching, as well as raising its international profile; recognises its achievements in highlighting the works of Scottish writers from medieval times to the present day; takes pride in the fact that Scottish writers have, it believes, been at the forefront of world literature for centuries, and in what it sees as their incredible influence on intellectuals and artists down through the years, and considers that Scottish literature deserves to be recognised as a world literature in its own right.
