Child Safety Week 2022

That the Parliament marks Child Safety Week, the flagship annual community awareness campaign run by the Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT); understands that Child Safety Week takes place between 6 and 12 June 2022 with the theme, Safety in Mind, encouraging parents and carers to think of safety, particularly when under pressure; considers that Child Safety Week acts as a catalyst for thousands of conversations and events across the UK with the aim of building awareness, knowledge and confidence around risks to children and helping to prevent accidents; acknowledges that accidents to children represent a serious public health issue, with safety organisations such as RoSPA outlining that child accidents are a major cause of preventable death, serious injury and long-term disability; understands that accidents disproportionately affect children from more deprived backgrounds, with falls accounting for the majority of non-fatal accidents, and threats to breathing such as suffocation, strangulation and choking causing the highest number of deaths; notes the research from CAPT that indicates that, although it is difficult to give a true cost of treating children's accidents as outpatients and inpatients, in the past, it has been estimated at more than £275 million a year and that it can cost as much as £250,000 to treat one severe bath water scald; understands that most home accidents are preventable through increased awareness, improvements in the home environment and greater product safety, which it considers makes awareness initiatives such as Child Safety Week vital endeavours; commends the efforts of all organisations that work together to increase the safety of children and young people, and wishes everyone involved with Child Safety Week every success.
