British Liver Trust Increasing Awareness of Early Diagnosis of Liver Disease to Prevent People Dying Unnecessarily
The motion
That the Parliament understands that Scotland is facing significant challenges with liver disease deaths, which are reportedly up to four times higher in deprived areas; further understands that liver disease is one of the leading causes of premature death in those under 75 with around 900 related deaths in Scotland annually; believes that 90% of liver disease is preventable, although an estimated three-quarters of people are diagnosed with cirrhosis when it is too late for effective treatment or intervention; highlights the work of the British Liver Trust to increase awareness of the importance of early diagnosis of liver disease and liver cancer, and acknowledges the reported benefits of automated processes to improve the identification of populations at risk of developing liver disease in primary care, including intelligent liver function tests (iLFTs) first developed at the University of Dundee, which it considers is a good practice for NHS boards to adopt.
