World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

The motion

That the Parliament notes that World Elder Abuse Awareness Day falls on 15 June 2002, and aims to raise awareness about elder abuse and how to reduce it; further notes that the World Health Organization states that one in six people aged over the age of 60 experienced some form of abuse in community settings during the past year, with rates increasing since the COVID-19 pandemic; understands that an estimated 2.7 million people a year in the UK are affected by the abuse of older people; believes that there is little awareness of the extent of this issue amongst the general population, with research by Hourglass showing that only 7% of the general population think of older adults when they think of victims of abuse, and understands that abuse can take many forms, specifically physical, psychological, financial, sexual or neglect, and that people of all backgrounds can be victims and reminds anyone with concerns that, as well as raising them with appropriate professionals, they can also contact Hourglass’ confidential, free 24/7 helpline on 0808 808 8141 for advice.
