Joanne Coates, Award-winning Documentary Photographer

That the Parliament congratulates award-winning documentary photographer, Joanne Coates, who has created an exhibition entitled, Daughters of Soil, featuring portraits of women in agriculture across Northumberland and the Scottish Borders; believes that it highlights the barriers that women face in Scotland when pursuing a career in agriculture; understands that women make up just 15% of the farming industry in the UK, and that, according to Prof Shortall, their contribution is often overlooked as they deal with barriers such as access to land, class, motherhood, and a lack of clear leadership roles; further understands that the exhibition is a collaboration with more than 40 women; notes that Daughters of the Soil explores questions around land inheritance, farming stereotypes and the history of who has traditionally worked the land, and notes that the photograph exhibition was being displayed at the Gymnasium Gallery in Berwick-upon-Tweed, until 5 June 2022.
