Remembering the Paisley Witch Trials
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates Paisley Witch Hunt 1697 for organising the successful memorial to the Paisley witches on 10 June 2022, where a memorial ceremony was held in Gallow Green, Paisley, to remember the treatment and injustice served to seven people who were accused, tried and found guilty of witchcraft; notes that Renfrewshire Witch Hunt 1697 (RWH1697), which is a charity that was formed in 2012 that helps to bring to life the events of 1696-7 where an 11-year-old girl, Christian Shaw, accused 35 people of witchcraft and seven of those local citizens were tortured, harangued and eventually put to their deaths, and understands that Paisley Witch Hunt 1697 is campaigning to make Gallow Green a more accessible memorial to those who suffered from the injustice of witchcraft laws in the Renfrewshire area, and continues to raise awareness of an important part of Paisley’s history.
