The motion

That the Parliament applauds Riverside Youth Band on reaching their 10th anniversary; understands that the champion brass band organised a special concert in Port Glasgow’s Community Campus on 17 June 2022 to mark the milestone, taking to the stage alongside youngsters from the Riverside Rookies, under the baton of musical director, Mark Good, and his wife Laura; recognises that the concert also included the world premiere of a new commission for the local band by Scottish composer, Alan Fernie, which pays tribute to the organisation’s Inverclyde roots; appreciates that, due to Riverside Youth Band’s efforts to maintain their momentum and rehearse during COVID-19 lockdown and despite not being able to meet in person, the group saw their membership grow during the pandemic; notes that the anniversary comes during a busy spell for the band, with the young people recently enjoying a trip to Perth to watch the renowned Black Dyke Band and a performance in Birmingham’s Symphony Hall with the National Youth Brass Band of Scotland; believes that Riverside Youth Band’s concert provided the perfect opportunity for the group to reflect on their highlights and achievements over the past decade, and wishes them all the best for the future.
