The motion

That the Parliament congratulates East Kilbride philanthropist, Sean Walls, and his charity Sight Aid International for winning £10,000 at the Scottish Edge Awards in the Wild Card category for the development of their innovative Audio Sun device; understands that the device can recharge three different types of hearing aid batteries through solar energy, preventing the need for single use ones; applauds Mage Control Systems in East Kilbride who helped design and develop the device and congratulates them with their involvement in this rewarding project; notes that, as a lens technician, Sean’s charitable work over the years has given the gift of sight to thousands of children in Kenya; recognises his aspiration to add hearing screening projects to his work, for which he returned to university to study audiology in 2018 and graduated in 2020; understands that the prize money will assist with the development of the technology for the Audio Sun device, which is currently being trialled in Kenya; believes that, by giving children the chance to hear, the device will help develop children's speech and give them a better quality of life; understands that there are plans in the pipeline for a commercial model to be developed once the prototype data has been analysed; believes that there is a huge potential to considerably reduce the number of hearing aid batteries that are sent to landfill sites each year if NHS Scotland were to consider adopting this technology, and wishes Sean and his team all the best with this project going forward.
