Hamilton Mausoleum
The motion
That the Parliament welcomes the re-opening by South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture of the iconic Hamilton Mausoleum to members of the public, following, it understands, severe water ingress and subsequent extensive repairs; notes that tours are now available at 2pm on the first and third Sundays of every month until 6 November 2022; acknowledges that the building was constructed in the grounds of the now-demolished Hamilton Palace and was built as a tomb and monument to Alexander, 10th Duke of Hamilton, nicknamed "El Magnifico", but was incomplete at the time of his death in 1852; notes that the 37-metre-high dome once held the world record for producing the longest ever echo, lasting for about 15 seconds; congratulates the Hamilton Mausoleum Trust, which, since its formation in 2019, has campaigned for the full restoration of the Mausoleum and the associated Keepers Lodge and for securing the long-term future of these cultural assets, including, alongside the Glasgow Institute of Architects, conducting a competition in a bid to generate design ideas that might save the Mausoleum and Keeper’s Lodge for future generations, and encourages members of the public to visit Hamilton’s Low Park Museum to view the winning shortlisted design ideas at the "Reimagining the Mausoleum" Design Competition free exhibition, as well as take a tour of Hamilton Mausoleum.
