The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Jack Vettriano for the launch of his Early Years Exhibition at Kirkcaldy Galleries showcasing work from his formative years; understands that, as a former mining engineer who left school at the age of 15 who never qualified for art school, Jack Vettriano taught himself to paint while studying the work of artists like Samuel Peploe and William McTaggart, replicating them at home with the watercolours that he had been given as a birthday gift; commends him for what it sees as his hard work and his dedication to the art community after, it understands, finding his vision, which is contained in one painting in the exhibition that he submitted to the Royal Scottish Academy annual exhibition in 1988, which sold on the first day, and realising that he could become a full-time artist, and notes that his work still sits alongside a letter of rejection from Edinburgh College of Art, offering an insight into the highs and lows of his life as an artist.
