Reopening of the Scapa Flow Museum

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the reopening to the public of the Scapa Flow Museum in Lyness, Hoy on 2 July 2022 following a £4.4 million and three year refurbishment; understands that the museum illustrates the importance of Scapa Flow as the base for the Royal Navy during both world wars and has grown to become one of Orkney's most visited sites since it first opened in 1990 in the former Royal Navy oil pumphouse; recognises that the expanded museum has been nominated for the Galvanizers Association Galvanizing Awards and will feature a new virtual reality display, fresh audio-visual displays, and a digital 3D exhibit which explores the many wreck sites in Scapa Flow, including HMS Royal Oak; notes that the multi-million-pound refurbishment has also involved extensive conversion works on the museum's 250 naval artefacts, including two guns recovered from SMS Bremse and SMS Karlsruhe following the scuttling of the German fleet in Scapa Flow in 1919; acknowledges that pupils from North Walls Community School have been closely involved as Junior Curators in the development, and that Sir Chris Hoy is due to formally reopen the museum in September 2022; commends the refurbishment project, which has been supported and funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Orkney Islands Council, Historic Environment Scotland, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Museums Galleries Scotland, LEADER and NatureScot; believes that the refurbishment project will help reinforce the legacy of Orkney's critical role during both world wars with both current and future generations, and act as a source of genuine pride amongst the local community, and wishes all involved at the museum all the very best on its reopening and for its future at the heart of Orkney's naval heritage.
