Importance of Accurate Wages: Asda

The motion

That the Parliament reaffirms its support for those workers who played a key role during the COVID-19 pandemic, including shopworkers who, it considers, placed themselves on the frontline to ensure that food and other essential supplies continued to be available to people; believes that, despite this, retail workers remain one of the most undervalued employment groups with, reportedly, a majority being subject to verbal abuse and threats of physical violence; understands that low pay has driven many retail workers to make use of foodbanks and pay day lenders; recognises what it sees as the importance of workers being paid accurately for their work; regrets reports of the increase in erroneous wage payments to workers within the Asda Group, as highlighted by the GMB trade union, and urges the company to take the necessary steps so that the workers who helped deliver the reported operating profits of £693.1 million in 2021, an increase of 42.5% on the previous year, can have some certainty and confidence that they will be paid accurately and on time for their work.
