Celebrating the Formal Opening of the STUC Margaret Irwin Centre

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the opening of the new home of the Scottish Trade Union Congress (STUC), the Margaret Irwin Centre; notes that the hub is based in Bridgeton in Glasgow’s east end, neighbouring the Glasgow Women’s Library at the heart of the Clyde Gateway regeneration area; understands that the STUC Margaret Irwin Centre is named after the STUC’s first secretary, who was instrumental in setting up the organisation in 1897 and held the position of secretary to the general council until 1900; further understands that Margaret Irwin championed the rights of women in Scotland by fighting for equal pay and the right to vote; notes that the centre was formally opened by the First Minister alongside STUC General Secretary, Roz Foyer, STUC President, Pauline O’Rourke, and UCU young member, Rosie Hampton, and believes that, as the STUC commemorates its 125th anniversary, the new base will serve as a dynamic hub for Scotland’s trade union movement as it continues to organise and work to improve the lives of workers across Scotland.
