Galas and Ridings Return
The motion
That the Parliament welcomes the return of the historic galas and ridings to Midlothian and the Borders, which are able to run again in person following a two year suspension necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic; understands that these events are steeped in tradition and history, with many having roots extending back centuries, and include gatherings such as Penicuik Hunter and Lass, Gorebridge Gala, Peebles Beltane, Galashiels Braw Lads, St Ronan’s Cleikum in Innerleithen, West Linton Whipman and Lauder Common Riding; further understands that the ridings are particularly characteristic to this region, rooted in local history, and an important part of local identity with many travelling across continents to attend, providing a boost to the local economies; recognises that these events are years in the planning and would not be possible without the hard work of community minded volunteers and the support of the wider community, and congratulates all involved in keeping these important traditions alive.
