Scottish Scientists Play Integral Role in the Development of the James Webb Space Telescope

The motion

That the Parliament celebrates what it sees as the integral contributions of Scottish scientists to the development of the James Webb Space Telescope, which, it understands, shows the most detailed images ever captured of the universe; understands that Hamilton-born scientist, Professor Gillian Wright MBE led much of the design and build of the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) in Scotland in her role as European Principal Investigator and director of the UK Astronomy Technology Centre, based at Edinburgh’s Royal Observatory; notes what it sees as the impressive international collaboration between the many MIRI partners and stakeholders along with the outstanding work of the James Webb team to build this powerful new observatory; believes that the images being released, mark a milestone moment for scientists around the world, and in particular, all those involved in developing the vital parts of the telescope; understands that the telescope’s mission is being led by NASA, the European Space Agency and Canadian Space Agency; welcomes the first image of the James Webb Space Telescope, which was revealed by the United States President, Joe Biden, and looks forward to the many discoveries that will come from MIRI in the future.
