Co-operative Party and Co-op Pharmacy Sunscreen Campaign

The motion

That the Parliament supports the campaign by the Co-operative Party and Co-op Pharmacy to designate sunscreen as a healthcare product exempt from VAT; understands that sunscreen is currently classified as a cosmetic product and is subject to 20% VAT; recognises the risk factors for all skin cancer types regarding excessive sunlight exposure, sun bed use, fair skin and susceptibility to sunburn; understands that, according to NHS Scotland, approximately 12,000 people are diagnosed with non-melanoma skin cancer in Scotland each year, with around 1,200 malignant melanoma being registered; is concerned that people who struggle to afford sunscreen may be going without adequate protection from the sun during the climate emergency, including on 19 July 2022 when Scotland recorded record-breaking temperatures; urges the UK Government to reclassify sunscreen to make it more affordable and recognise it as an essential medical supply that should be used regularly, and wishes the Co-operative Party and Co-op Pharmacy every success with its petition and wider campaign.
