Scottish SPCA Pet Aid Initiative

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the launch by the Scottish SPCA of its Pet Aid initiative to support people and pets who are struggling due to the cost of living crisis; notes that through Pet Aid, it will provide essential food supplies for animals through a network of food banks across most of Scotland, with a view to keeping pets and people together wherever possible; recognises that this is in the context of calls to the Scottish SPCA’s helpline by people looking to give up pets trebling in 2022, a trend that is also being reported by other charities such as Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home; understands that many people who find themselves in this position don’t want to give up their animal, are very distressed, but feel they have no choice; believes that nobody should have to give up their much loved pet because they are unable to afford the items they need, and hopes that Pet Aid goes some way to preventing this heartbreaking outcome, for the good of both owners and animals.
