Open University Implements 4,800 Permanent Contracts Following Negotiation with the University and College Union

The motion

That the Parliament celebrates the news that the Open University (OU) has begun rolling out a programme of new permanent contracts for 4,800 previously casualised lecturers; believes that this means that the affected staff will no longer have to constantly re-apply for their jobs, providing greater job security; understands that the new permanent contracts offer a pay uplift of 10-15%, additional annual leave, and staff development allowances for staff members who had previously worked on fixed-term contracts; recognises what it sees as the hard work that went into the extensive negotiations between the OU and the University and College Union (UCU); joins the UCU in calling for other universities across Scotland and the wider UK to end casualisation, and hopes that this will continue to become a broader trend that benefits higher education for years to come.
