Belted Galloway Cattle Society Celebrates its Centenary

The motion

That the Parliament warmly congratulates the Belted Galloway Cattle Society as it celebrates its centenary year, and warmly welcomes the news that the society is thriving as never before with at least one new member signing up every week; acknowledges that the membership currently stands in excess of 500, including associate members and breeders not only in the UK, but Eire, and other parts of the world, such as Canada, New Zealand and America; considers that the many attributes of the Belted Galloway means that it is now at the forefront of sustainable farming practices; notes that having successfully overcome a serious setback caused by outbreaks of foot and mouth disease in 2001 and 2006, the breed is now enjoying a brighter future, as demonstrated at the annual October society dinner staged in Castle Douglas along with the sale, show and annual general meeting that has led to further opportunities for forging new business and friendship; understands that the cattle breed is presently experiencing an upsurge in popularity due to the fact it is one of the most visually distinctive breeds; recognises the many merits of the breed, including its unique appearance and good nature, as well as its ability to provide top quality beef; believes that this is largely down to the cattle originating in the harsh upland climate of the Galloway hills in beautiful south west Scotland; accepts that the "Beltie" is well-equipped to thrive outdoors in any climate, live far longer than other cattle, often well into their twenties, and produces more calves; welcomes the involvement of HRH Princess Alexandra, patron of the Belted Galloway Cattle Society, who recently attended the Wigtown Show at Bladnoch Park, Wigtown, where many fine examples of the "Beltie" were on display, as well as at both the Stewartry and Dumfries Agricultural Shows, and attracting huge interest and admiration from the general public, and wishes the society and its growing membership continued success in the coming year as it provides great hopes for Scotland’s agricultural sector.
