Whithorn ReBuild Team Achieve Notable Success in National Kickstart Finals

The motion

That the Parliament acknowledges the achievement of the Whithorn ReBuild team who were runners-up in their category at the national Kickstart award finals staged at Lancaster House in London recently, an event attended by the Prime Minister; notes that the project was nominated by the Department for Work and Pensions for its ground-breaking approach towards young employability and training; recognises that the Whithorn ReBuild project emerged, despite the COVID-19 pandemic, as the Whithorn Trust sought to address local youth unemployment and improve mental health by creating historic construction skills and training posts linked to the heritage of previous skills established in the Whithorn area, with some of the skills dating back more than one thousand years; notes the involvement of six young people who were subsequently trained in traditional masonry, working with line and stone, metal working and other ancient and historic skills, which it understands are in short supply within the industry; welcomes that the pilot project has resulted in the involvement of a further three people as the project seeks to become a social enterprise, aiming to generate income streams to support sustainable training and employment opportunities, and to work alongside Douglas Ewart High School in the future months ahead, and wishes this exciting venture continued success as it expands its employment numbers and skills set.
