Denis Law Legacy Trust and Families Outside, Stronger Families Inside Out

The motion

That the Parliament recognises the efforts of the Denis Law Legacy Trust, in partnership with Families Outside, in delivering the Stronger Families Inside Out initiative; understands that the initiative, which is funded by BBC Children in Need, strengthens relationships between people in prison at HMP Grampian and the families through sporting and creative activities; commends what it sees as the important role staff play in delivering the service by providing a range of activities encouraging positive family interactions through engagement, and by creating a child-friendly environment to reduce stress and anxiety; notes that the Trust’s community-based peer support group, Club 10, takes place once per month in partnership with Robert Gordon University; understands that families affected by imprisonment from Aberdeen and across Aberdeenshire engage in activities in their local communities to help reduce social isolation and stigma, with children and young people in particular having opportunities to build friendships with peers through shared experiences; notes that the initiative is entirely free of charge and includes transport and food for all the families involved; considers that the initiative and Club 10 play an important role in reducing re-offending, diverting children and young people from offending behaviour, and provides adult mentors in communities which, it understands can result in volunteering with the Trust’s flagship programme, Streetsport; commends the impact of the initiative on over 2,000 participants from children and young people to date, which, it understands, has been credited for making a positive difference to their lives, and passes on its best wishes to all involved for continued success in the future.
