Orkney International Science Festival 2022

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the 32nd Orkney International Science Festival, which runs from 5 to 11 September 2022; understands that the festival is the second oldest of its kind in the world and offers over 100 virtual and in-person events to the public at various indoor and outdoor venues across Orkney; further understands that the programme this year is linking with Scotland's Year of Stories, celebrating the wealth of stories inspired by, or written and created in Scotland; acknowledges that the rich variety of exhibitions, workshops, lectures, performances, and open days creates an engaging festival for all ages, with an impressive combination of topics and art forms; highlights the range of local and national organisations involved with the festival, including Orkney Native Wildlife Project, European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC), Glasgow Science Centre, Scottish Dolphin Centre and Scottish Seabird Centre; commends what it sees as the positive role the festival plays in engaging the local community, especially schools, with the wonders of science and in attracting visitors from around the world to the islands; believes that the festival is further evidence of Orkney's growing reputation as a cultural hub with a wide variety of world-acclaimed festivals taking place throughout the year; congratulates everyone involved with the festival, in particular, the director, Howie Firth, on organising what it hopes will be another successful and comprehensive festival, and wishes the festival continued success for years to come.
