World Suicide Prevention Day 2022

The motion

That the Parliament marks World Suicide Prevention Day 2022 on 10 September; notes what it sees as the importance of the theme “Creating Hope Through Action”, which aims to encourage people and governments to take actions that reduce stigma and prevent suicide; highlights that evidence suggests that asking someone if they are feeling suicidal won’t make things worse and could save a life; emphasises what it considers is the importance of the Scottish Government’s upcoming Suicide Prevention Strategy in ensuring fewer people die by suicide in Scotland; notes what it sees as the importance of setting suicide prevention as a public health priority, including by expanding access to mental health services; urges anyone who needs support to seek help, including by contacting Samaritans on 116 123, and expresses its hope that government and civil society can continue to work together to prevent suicide in Scotland.
