Key Funding Secured for Baron’s Haugh Nature Reserve
The motion
That the Parliament recognises that RSPB Scotland’s Baron’s Haugh Nature Reserve in Motherwell has received over £200,000 in funding through the Nature Restoration Fund; believes that the impacts of a dynamic river and amplified flooding have been easy to spot at the nature reserve in Motherwell, with increased erosion, the raised soil bund separating the nature reserve from the river leading to loss of footpaths and a bird hide, as well as making an impact on the wildlife in the reserve; notes that RSPB Scotland have been attempting to repair and protect the bund from the increasing pressure of the river, however erosion has continued and accelerated; understands that the Baron’s Haugh wetland project will seek to tackle these issues and create a sustainable long-term future for the reserve, while also delivering new habitat for wildlife, and further understands that RSPB Scotland are developing plans to upgrade the visitor infrastructure including new paths, boardwalks and wildlife viewing structures, bringing the much loved local nature reserve up to a fantastic standard for visitors and wildlife.
