Scotland Outpaces the UK on Growth of FDI

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes data, which, it considers, shows that Scotland outpaces the UK on growth of foreign direct investment (FDI); considers that Scotland recorded a much sharper rise in the number of foreign direct investment projects compared to the UK as a whole in the year to March 2022, according to figures published in the report Inward Investment Results 2021-22 by the UK Department for International Trade; notes that the data reveals that Scotland attracted 119 FDI projects during that period, which is up 29% from the previous 12 months; understands from the data that, in the UK as a whole, the number of FDI projects secured in 2021-22 months was up just 3% from the previous 12 months, which followed a 17% drop in 2020-21; notes from the data that 4,408 new jobs were attached to FDI projects won by Scotland in 2020-21; welcomes that Scotland reportedly achieved a 14% rise in the number of FDI projects secured in the calendar year 2021, which, it believes, is some way ahead of the 1.8% increase for the UK as a whole; notes the EY Attractiveness Survey Scotland 2022 report, which showed Scotland’s attractiveness rating for potential future investors has hit record highs, and welcomes reports that Scotland is rated the most attractive location in the UK for FDI, being tipped only by London.
