Ferguson Marine Takes on 15 New Apprentices

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the news that 15 new apprentices are starting with Ferguson Marine in 2022; understands that 300 applications for the shipyard’s annual apprenticeship programme were received, up from 270 in 2021, and is part of Ferguson’s ‘grown our own’ initiative, which is supported by the programme partner, West College Scotland; understands that the programme aims to develop and maintain a sustainable skilled workforce for the business while giving back to the local community; notes that year one of the course consists of theoretical work at the college’s Greenock campus, which gradually leads to more time working at the yard with assigned tradesmen, followed by full-time on-the-job training in the second and third years; acknowledges that Ferguson’s now has 54 apprentices at the yard, showing, it believes, the management’s commitment to providing job opportunities for young people in Inverclyde; considers that apprenticeships offer an excellent way for young people to develop their skills while also enabling them to earn while they learn, and wishes the new cohort of apprentices all the best as they embark on their future.
