Kinneil Estate Celebrates Centenary of Public Heritage

The motion

That the Parliament recognises the centenary anniversary of the public heritage of Kinneil Estate, including the historic Kinneil House in Bo’ness, Falkirk; understands that in 1922, thousands of acres of land holdings across central Scotland belonging to the Hamilton family were put up for auction and sold for public ownership to Bo’ness Town Council, including Kinneil House and its surrounding estate, which hold historic links to the Antonine Wall and James Watt, who constructed his first engine there in 1700; recognises that 100 years on, locals maintain their vested interest in this crucial historical public heritage site by volunteering and participating with organisations such as Friends of Kinneil; understands that Friends of Kinneil is a volunteer-led charity dedicated to the development, promotion and educational values of the Kinneil Estate, for the benefit and enjoyment of those local to the community and beyond; notes that Friends of Kinneil facilitate and promote many events that forge community links with this site of significant public heritage, such as the family-friendly evening bat walk that took place in the estate in August to mark International Bat Night, or the Kinneil Hill Climb, organised by Bo’ness Sporting Automobile Club, which featured classic racing cars tackling Scotland’s oldest permanent race track on 10 and 11 September 2022; recognises what it sees as the importance of the centenary anniversary milestone of Kinneil Estate and its significance in the history of not only the local community of Bo’ness but indeed also across Scotland; further congratulates the voluntary work of organisations such as Friends of Kinneil for their efforts to promote, develop and educate others of the importance of Kinneil Estate for generations to come, and wishes them well for all their future endeavours.
