Lodged by Liam McArthur (Scottish Liberal Democrats) Standard Motion 24 supporters

The motion

That the Parliament applauds the decision to allow same-sex marriage at St Magnus Cathedral in Orkney for the first time; understands that St Magnus Cathedral Minister, Reverend Fraser Macnaughton, is now able to conduct same-sex marriages from 1 September 2022; considers that this is an historic moment for equality and inclusion in Orkney, which it believes has been widely welcomed by the local community; commends the decision by the Church of Scotland General Assembly in May to allow ministers and deacons to marry same-sex couples, which followed years of campaigning for equal marriage; acknowledges what it sees as the significance of St Magnus Cathedral, known as the Light in the North, to the people of Orkney, and its status as the most northerly cathedral in the UK; believes that those with lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender identities (LGBT+) in Orkney and across the world should have equal rights and be able to live free from prejudice and discrimination, and thanks Reverend Macnaughton and the wider cathedral congregation for opening up these opportunities for greater equality in future.
