International Safe Abortion Day

Lodged by Gillian Mackay (Scottish Green Party) Standard Motion 24 supporters

The motion

That the Parliament recognises 28 September as International Safe Abortion Day (ISAD), an annual day of action whose aim, it understands, is to defend, protect, and fulfil the right to accessible, safe and legal abortion; understands that ISAD originated in Latin America and the Caribbean, and that women’s groups have been mobilising there over the last two decades around 28 September to demand their governments decriminalise abortion; further understands that this date, 28 September, was chosen in commemoration of the abolition of slavery in Brazil but that it is now also remembered as the day of the “free womb”; considers that abortion is still not fully decriminalised in Scotland; believes that many people trying to access abortion services face intimidation and harassment in Scotland today; highlights what it sees as the importance of ISAD in Scotland and beyond, and hopes that others take inspiration from their efforts.
