Bressay Development Ltd’s Speldiburn Initiative Shortlisted for SURF Award

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Bressay Development Ltd’s Speldiburn initiative on being shortlisted fora prestigious 2022 SURF Award for Best Practice in Community Regeneration from Scotland’s Regeneration Forum (SURF), which identifies and celebrates best practice, innovation and achievement in interventions that improve Scottish communities; understands that upon the closure of Bressay Primary School and Nursery, Bressay Development Ltd took on the lease of the building and in 2021 took ownership of the building and surrounding site; notes that the site, now called Speldiburn, is home to the Speldiburn Café, an art and craft studio, art gallery, the Good As New shop, community lending library, art studios and the Bressay Under 5s Group; understands that Speldiburn also plays an integral role in the weekly Parkrun event by providing café space and facilities; commends Bressay Development Ltd for reclaiming the former school as a community asset and creating a place for islanders to meet and volunteer, and congratulates all at Bressay Development Ltd for the recognition of their achievements in the SURF Award nomination.
