European Carers Day 2022

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes European Carers Day, on 6 October 2022, which highlights the theme of "tackling gender inequality in care giving", in recognition of data showing that, across Europe, 80% of all care is provided by unpaid carers and that, on average, 59% of all unpaid carers in Europe are women; understands that working women spend on average 22 hours per week in unpaid work, while working men spend fewer than 10 hours, and the demand on carers’ time has increased further due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic; recognises reports that this has a clear negative impact on women’s employment opportunities and working hours, with long-term caring responsibilities tending to compound the gender pay and pensions gaps that already exist because of childcare responsibilities, and considers that, while good progress has been made to support unpaid carers in Scotland, more must be done to address gender inequality in care giving, to ensure that women are able to combine caring responsibilities with employment and active citizenship.
