Falkirk Conservation Biologist Set for Journey to Antarctica

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Mairi Hilton, originally from Bo’ness in Falkirk, on beating 4,000 other applicants to secure her new role in Antarctica; understands that Mairi, alongside the three other successful applicants, constitutes an all-female team selected by the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust; notes that the journey will take Mairi 9,000 miles south to one of the most remote working locations, Port Lockroy base on Goudier Island, which, it understands, has played host to many scientists, explorers, and whalers over the last century; considers the historical significance of the Port Lockroy base, first established as part of Operation Tabarin, a secret expedition conducted during World War Two from 1943 to 1946; values the contribution it believes Mairi’s work will make to conservation efforts as she commits to the role of the island’s wildlife monitor for a five month period, with a key focus of hers being on the island’s wild bird populations; understands that the team begin their training for this journey in Cambridge later in October 2022, before they set off for Antarctica in early November; further congratulates Mairi for what it considers all her hard work securing this coveted conservation role, and wishes her and the team all the best for their journey and their work in Antarctica.
