Conserving Native Species

Lodged by Fulton MacGregor (Scottish National Party) Standard Motion 21 supporters

The motion

That the Parliament recognises what it sees as the importance of conserving native species, specifically the great crested newt; considers that, despite any confusion or false assertations of late, the species is both rare and threatened in the UK and Europe; believes that there is a duty of care held by governments to uphold standards of conservation; praises the work of the activists and volunteers in both supporting this vital work and raising awareness, and believes an important role is played by Gartcosh Nature Reserve in the Coatbridge and Chryston constituency not only in protecting the largest colony of great crested newts in Scotland but also in providing an invaluable community space and housing of a variety of wildlife.
