World Stroke Day and FAST Campaign

The motion

That the Parliament recognises World Stroke Day, which takes place on 29 October each year and aims to raise awareness of the signs of stroke; understands that strokes continue to be one of the leading causes of death and severe disability in Scotland; further understands that admissions to hospital with stroke fell during the waves of the COVID-19 pandemic; notes concerns that this was likely to be caused by a reluctance to seek hospital treatment; understands that the most recent NRS Vital Events report, for 2021, found that cerebrovascular deaths increased in 2020 and have not yet returned to pre-pandemic levels; recognises what it sees as the importance of public health campaigns such as FAST in raising awareness of stroke symptoms and encouraging people to seek medical assistance; notes that early detection of stroke is linked to earlier treatment and better outcomes; believes that there is an absence of a nationally co-ordinated FAST campaign since prior to the pandemic, and notes calls from Chest Heart and Stroke Scotland for a national FAST campaign to increase recognition of stroke symptoms, assist with early detection and improve outcomes for stroke survivors.
