The Importance of Occupational Therapists in Primary Care

The motion

That the Parliament commends the Royal College of Occupational Therapists (RCOT) for its work in highlighting what it sees as the importance of the role of occupational therapists in primary care and in calling for occupational therapists to be included as core members of the multi-disciplinary teams in GP surgeries, to streamline GP’s workloads and create less reliance on GPs; considers that occupational therapists have a key role in rehabilitation and recovery from COVID-19 and in rehabilitating frail older adults, those with poor mental health and assisting working age adults with employment difficulties; commends in particular the Staff Long Covid Team at NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, staffed by two occupational therapists, Lorraine Crothers and Justine Griffin, which, it believes, is a fine example of the effective work of occupational therapists in recovery from COVID-19; further commends a service within NHS Lanarkshire, which is evaluating occupational therapy interventions within primary care, the results of which reportedly showed significant improvements in patient satisfaction and quality of life and also reduced GP appointments, and wishes the college well with its aim for the project to be used to develop a model of practice that can be rolled out across all NHS Scotland health boards.
