University of Edinburgh Ranked 1st in UK and 4th in World in New Sustainability Rankings

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the report from QS Quacquarelli Symonds, compilers of the brand-new QS World University Rankings: Sustainability, that the University of Edinburgh is ranked 1st in the UK and 4th globally, followed by the University of Glasgow, ranked 2nd in the UK and 13th globally, out of 700 institutions ranked globally; notes that the QS World University Rankings: Sustainability provides information on which institutions are actively demonstrating a commitment to a more sustainable existence; further notes that the rankings evaluate universities as campuses and their environmental friendliness, universities as employers and their social responsibility record, universities as research powerhouses and their contribution to finding solutions to global issues linked to sustainability, and universities as educators, shaping minds and educating society about the importance of sustainable development; understands that the assessment includes evidence from the impact that alumni are making in science and technology to solve climate issues, to the impact of research being done across the UN's 17 sustainable development goals; notes the reported words of Professor Peter Mathieson, principal and vice-chancellor of the University of Edinburgh, that "these rankings reflect the efforts of our staff and students in making the University of Edinburgh more environmentally and socially responsible" with a strategy that "aligns the University with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals", and welcomes the Principal’s commitment to "continue to deliver positive change locally and globally through our academic research, education, operations and partnerships".
