The motion

That the Parliament commends the Scottish Nelson Mandela Memorial Foundation for its work in raising funds for a statue of Nelson Mandela in Glasgow, as a focus for education on Nelson Mandela’s life, his links with Scotland and his lessons for current and future generations on anti-racism and social justice; believes that a statue would serve as a worthy memorial to Nelson Mandela and the anti-apartheid movement; commends the foundation for its work in campaigning for the establishment of an education programme, including its work with West of Scotland Development Education Centre in developing a pilot education programme for primary and early secondary school children on Mandela’s life, apartheid in South Africa and the historical lessons on human rights and challenging racism; congratulates the foundation for raising more than £130,000 through its fundraising activities since the launch of the appeal five years ago, and its recent crowdfunding campaign during October 2022 which fittingly coincided with Black History Month; encourages businesses, organisations and individuals to support the campaign and fundraising activities by visiting the mandelascottishmemorial.org website, and wishes the Nelson Mandela Scottish Memorial Foundation every success for the future.
