Wrestler Quin Mackie Gets Scotland Call-up

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates the wrestler, Quin Mackie, who is age 12 and from Port Glasgow, on seeing off opponents twice her age and overcoming a rare medical condition to represent Scotland at the Breton International Backhold Championships in Brittany in 2023; understands that Quin’s call-up follows a strong Highland Games season that saw her win five first places, three seconds and taking the top spot in the 8st 7lbs Scottish Championship; notes that she has been wrestling since she was four years old and trains with Red Road Wrestling Club; recognises that, due to opponents competing based on weight category rather than age, Quin has come up against adult opponents, including a female member of staff from her school at the Cowal Games; acknowledges that Quin was born with cutis marmorata telangiectatica congenita (CMTC), which causes her left leg to be four times shorter than her right, and that she underwent major knee surgery prior to the 2022 season to help remedy the issue; appreciates that while CMTC can cause problems with balance and strength, Quin’s perseverance and dedication to training had paid dividends; believes that Quin is an inspiration to young people and shows that, no matter what your age, with hard work and commitment, you can achieve your dreams, and wishes her all the best as she prepares to represent Scotland next year.
