Juliet McCracken and Ken Russell Retire from the Doune Newspaper

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Juliet McCracken and Ken Russell as they step back from running the local Doune newspaper, The Bridge, after 20 and 22 years respectively; acknowledges the hard work and commitment that went into the local publication, which, it understands, was born out of a meeting of the original Doune and Deanston Development Trust and then set in up 2000 by Ken after he saw a need to inform the community with a monthly newspaper; notes the research and time that went into setting up the newspaper which, it understands, Ken did from his kitchen table after much research and engagement with the council and other local news publications; understands that Juliet joined The Bridge in 2002 as editor following a career as a freelance travel writer, travelling the world and contributing widely to national press including The Times, The Guardian, The Independent, Vogue and House & Garden; notes the support of local business advertising and a small grant, which, it understands, helped get The Bridge up and running; further notes the significant impact that the award- winning newspaper has gone onto have in the community and the overall importance, it believes, of local, independent media outlets in a well-functioning and well-informed community; notes Juliet and Ken's focus on The Bridge being a team effort and their wish to acknowledge the hard work of all volunteers over the years; wishes Juliet and Ken an enjoyable retirement from The Bridge, and looks forward to seeing the newspaper continue to thrive long into the future.
