Greenock Baptist Church First in Scotland to Join Refugee Support Scheme

The motion

That the Parliament commends Greenock Baptist Church on becoming the first church in Scotland to be part of the UK-wide Welcome Churches movement, which aims to ensure that every refugee in the UK is welcomed by their local church; understands that Pastor Paul Coventry and seven trained volunteers from the church are on call to support refugees and asylum seekers looking for sanctuary in Inverclyde, befriending them and providing a welcome box filled with small gifts and local information to help them feel welcome, and offering follow-up visits to ensure that they are settling in well; appreciates that the volunteers were able to access training using funding from the Inverclyde Windfarm Community Fund; understands that Greenock Baptist Church now joins an established support network in Inverclyde for refugees, and thanks everyone involved in helping to ensure that Inverclyde is an open and welcoming place for all those seeking refuge.
