Impact of Not Uprating Means Tested Benefits in Line with Inflation in 2023-24

The motion

That the Parliament is concerned by the findings of a Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) report, published on 12 October 2022, highlighting the potential impact across UK parliamentary constituencies if the UK Government chooses not to uprate means tested benefits in line with inflation in 2023-24; understands that 22% of working-age families receive means tested benefits in the Perth and Kinross Council area, and that this is a concern across all Scottish local authority areas; further understands that the 6% increase in line with earnings, reportedly being considered by the UK Government, does not take into account inflation and would subject these constituents to a real-terms decrease in income; notes the point made by JRF that "politicians should think long and hard about the impact of withholding hundreds of pounds from thousands of families in their constituencies when the basic rate of benefits is already at its lowest in real terms for 40 years and prices are sky-high", and believes that the ongoing and deepening cost of living crisis will be felt by many people across every constituency in Scotland and that it will have its greatest impact on the most vulnerable.
