Remembering Firefighter Sub Officer Adrian McGill

The motion

That the Scottish Parliament remembers all those firefighters across Scotland who have lost their life in the line of duty whilst seeking to keep others safe; commends the Fire Brigade Union (FBU) for its rolling out of its Red Plaque Scheme, which has been in place since 2017, which, it understands, is an opportunity to remember and commemorate the service and sacrifice for those fire fighters who have lost their lives over the years; pays tribute to the bravery, service and selflessness of Sub Officer Adrian McGill who tragically lost his life on 18 November 1972 after his crew was called to a fire in a disused wallpaper shop in Maryhill Road, which spread to neighbouring properties on both Maryhill Road and Great Western Road; understands that Sub Officer McGill and his colleagues bravely rescued 15 people by ladders and over 200 others who were led through smoke to safety or evacuated from adjacent premises; acknowledges the heroism of Sub Officer McGill who sacrificed his life trying to save a resident who was trapped in her top floor flat on Maryhill Road but understands that he sadly succumbed to the effects of smoke inhalation after he got the resident to use his breathing apparatus; welcomes the unveiling of a Red Plaque at a ceremony to commemorate Sub Officer McGill on 18 November 2022 at 1.30 pm at Maryhill Fire Station, and believes that this event, which will be attended by various civic and service representatives and most significantly family, friends and former colleagues of Sub Officer McGill, is a fitting tribute to his memory.
